According to recent reports, the Justice Department has threatened to prosecute parents for protesting against public school boards. In an announcement that some parents claim is proof the federal government is concerned about parents taking back the educational system they had control of prior to the 1970s, the DOJ said it had engaged the FBI and local law enforcement to tackle the ‘disturbing trend’ of teachers and board members being threatened or harassed.
The Biden administration officially announced that it will be using the powers of the federal government to investigate and potentially prosecute parents who attend school board meetings to protest Critical Race Theory, as well as other issues like mask and vaccine mandates.
The Office of the Attorney General issued the memorandum stating that:
“In recent months, there has been a disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence against school administrators, board members, teachers, and staff who participate in the vital work of running our nation’s public schools. While spirited debate about policy matters is protected under our Constitution, that protection does not extend to threats of violence or efforts to intimidate individuals based on their views.”
The announcement comes just days after the National School Board Association sent a letter to the White House demanding that the President take action against parents across the country swarming school boards and other meetings.
In a letter written on September 29th, addressed to Joe Biden, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) claimed that school teachers are under ‘immediate threat,’ and asked for assistance” to ‘protect students and teachers’ at the hands of concerned parents.
The association says that those involved could be guilty of domestic terrorism. And because of this, it merits investigation from the federal government. The NSBA says such a development would merit even more help from the DHS and FBI, and suggests a review should examine appropriate enforceable actions using the PATRIOT Act.
Under the ‘police powers’ of the tenth amendment, it is clearly stated that the regulation of health, wellbeing, morality, and education of citizens is under the sole authority of the states. Police powers are the powers of a state government to make and enforce all laws necessary to preserve public health, safety, and the general welfare of the citizens of the country.
Many parents argue that It is not enough to attempt to legislate a ban on CRT for example from schools. They claim that this is a temporary band-aid that will be ripped off by teachers and schools finding loopholes in the laws. Instead, they suggest that Republican states form an entirely new curriculum, one that is created under a conservative framework, and that is pro-family, pro-nation, and pro-Christianity.
Because around 70% of all textbooks for all public schools are written by two companies, McGraw Hill and Houghton Mifflin, some conservatives even go so far as to argue that Republican states should select new book publishers and specific books.
